Bilbao (Spain), May 6th, 2022 – The project “A challenge for science”, by the SENER Foundation and the SENER Group, has been classified among the twelve finalist entries in the STEAM Euskadi Sariak Awards and, consequently, has received the STEAM Euskadi seal awarded by these prizes.

The STEAM Euskadi Sariak Awards, which are celebrating their second edition, are aimed at educational centers and entities that work to inspire vocations and professional aspirations in science, technology, engineering and mathematics or to improve the scientific and technological training of students.

The evaluation team of this second edition of the STEAM Euskadi Sariak awards was formed by representatives of the Berritzegunes, Tknika, the University of Deusto, the UPV/EHU and the Basque Innovation Agency, Innobasque, and has chosen “A challenge for science” as a finalist among the 137 applications submitted.

What is “A challenge for science”? “A challenge for Science” is a project of the SENER Foundation and SENER that seeks to encourage scientific-technical vocations among young people by bringing them closer to the innovation challenges that a company like SENER faces every day and how engineering and technology improve people’s lives. Subsequently, the students’ solutions are evaluated by SENER personnel and other external collaborators with expertise in these areas of engineering.

The project has the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.

Some of the challenges posed to the students were: show the benefits of solar thermal technology to the different stakeholders involved; ways to purify air to get rid of pollution in cities; how to minimize the risk of spreading a virus on public transportation; and how to provide urban services more efficiently. The young participants were thus able to see how science, technology and engineering serve people in order to improve their quality of life.
